Cemil Qocgiri's fifth album Zalal was released recently, which consists of songs in Zazaki, one of the oldest languages in Mesopotamia, which is in danger of disappearing. Zazaki is a language which has been classed by UNESCO as a "language threatened with extinction". 'Zalal' is an attempt to build a bridge between an endangered language and the current generation. Alevism/Qizilbash is considered to be the continuation of ancient Anatolian-Mesopotamian belief systems, mainly Zoroastrianism. The tenbur (long-necked lute), the main instrument played by Cemîl Qoçgîrî, is central to this musical heritage, not just as a musical instrument, but it is also deemed sacred by the Alevis. |
