Kimi was born in a musical family in Guinea-Bissau, starting to play the balaphon at the age of three, learning kora, guitar and traditional drums as a teenager. He was trained in traditional Mandingo music, but was also interested in popular musical style from Guinea-Bissau gumb?, afrobeat, morna from Cabo Verde and western jazz and blues. When he moved to Portugal in his twenties his musical career took a next step into professionalization. After two albums in 2005 and 2009 this third album followed, covering themes ranging from political and social issues to emotions and the importance of family. Balaphon still has its central place in the songs. |
