?Poetry in Motion? explores the music, poetry, history and personalities of the esteemed East African orchestra Ikhwan Safaa. Performers of taraab (poetry sung in Swahili), Nadi Ikhwan Safaa (?The True Brotherhood Club?) celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the world today. African orchestral music is largely unknown, falling, as it does, outside the popular perceptions of African music. The film offers a music and poetry-driven narrative of a musical club that survived colonialism and violent revolution, and yet always managed to celebrate the joys and challenges of life. |
