Rajery is the virtuoso of the valiha, a simple bamboo pole with 20 strings running its length, usually made from unwound bicycle brake cables. Although it requires great dexterity, the Malagasy musician Rajery set out to become its master despite having had his right hand amputated. Rajery has a unique style, refined and poetic. His music is about Malagasy traditions (highlands melodies, rhythms of the coast, southern vocal polyphony). His songs, written in the language of the country, and about bushfires ravaging the primary forest, everyday life of the Malagasy people, his fears and his hopes. |
