Al Bilali Soudan present an improvisational tour de force of traditional rhythms and scales. Their style is Tehardent, the Tamasheq word for their traditional stringed instruments. A precursor of the modern banjo, the Tehardent has accompanied griots, bards, dancers and vocalists for centuries. Abellow Yattara, group leader, lives in Timbuktu. His family has performed this music for generations. Playing lead tehardent and vocal, he is joined by his uncle Aboubacrine Yattara who plays the bass tehardent, by Aboubacrine?s son Tchiale Ag Aboubacrine on calabash percussion and Abellow?s son Mohamed Ag Abellow on tehardent and vocal. |
