Spain was a meeting place of cultural interaction between groups belonging to the three monotheistic religions and different ethnicities. The simultaneity of speech and debate between Jews and non-Jews living in the same places reflects the commonality of spirit that has characterised the relationship between Muslim and Jewish musicians through the ages. They shared the same emotional experience, the same way of life, the same modes of expression, and adhered to the values extolled by ancient and modern authors. It is in this same spirit that Mohammed Briouel and Fran?oise Atlan approach the repertoire of Judeo-Spanish songs and Arab-Andalusian songs performed in the same maqam-mode to illustrate the vibrancy of this tradition in Morocco.
