Small Voyages is Chloe Matharu's first album includes songs inspired by her time working as a Navigational Officer sailing around the world on oil tankers. It has been carefully crafted with field recordings of the natural world blended with Chloe's haunting voice and compositions on the Celtic harp. Matharu's voice is clear and distinctly Scottish. It is genuinely haunting with the occasional catch in her sound that adds an emotional depth to her singing. She says of her time in the Merchant Navy that the "most special experience for me has been my time as a cadet sailing around Scotland seeing familiar places from an entirely new perspective". And that is reflected in her music. The closing song 'Ships IN the Night' takes a familiar theme and changes the viewpoint to that of Whales passing at sea. The harp and arrangements give a new perspective on otherwise straightforward folk songs. Much as the land seen from the sea takes on a different quality. |
