The Workshop started as a musical laboratory: hours of sessions, to discover, interiorize and share the music of Stephane Payen, Doug Hammond (with whom the saxophonist plays since a few years) or Hans Werner Henze. Through this project, Stephane Payen proposes a reflection on certain foundations of sub-Saharan African music (mainly from West and Central Africa). Over the years, the saxophonist and composer has carried out extensive research to understand what seems to govern music where the notion of the collective is paramount (Senegalese sabar or the music of the Aka and Ba-benzele pygmies). |
