Kalifa Kone is one of the most highly regarded musicians in Mali and West Africa. He has collaborated with other important exponents of Malian music such as Baba Sissoko and Salif Keita. He plays the kamele'n'goni and the 6- and 8-string Malian harp, as well as various types of percussion instruments, including the talkin'drum. Colourful and varied music that is a mixture of tribal music in its own right, jazz, funk and world. In the 12 tracks on the album, Kone and his ensemble are able to strike the listener with their unpredictable harmonic variations and their incredible ability to vary musical styles not only from track to track but also within a track. The technical ability of this ensemble is unquestionable, as is their musical passion and their ability to invent continuous harmonic solutions. There is practically no one piece that is the same as another, even if it is always within a very personal world music that is heavily infiltrated with jazz and funk. |
