Dalava gives a beautifully idiosyncratic answer with their eponymous debut album (released in 2014, and now finally availble). Based on the Moravian folk songs transcribed by biologist and ethnomusicologist Dr. Vladimir Ulehla, and led by vocalist Julia Ulehla (Vladimir?s great granddaughter) and guitarist Aram Bajakian, the album vibrates with intensity, even when whispering and spare. Prepared and distorted guitar alternates with eerie soundscapes. Ulehla?s voice teases and caresses ('Mila ma'), then leaps and bounds ('Mamicky'). This limited edition compact disc will feature translations of the Czech lyrics and 4 panel pullout poster of a beautiful black and white photo by the Czech photographer Milos Spurny. |
