On his new album ?De Baile Solto? Siba combines the polyrhythms of Pernambuco street music with Congolese guitar, rock and other international influences. Siba is one of Brazil?s most respected contemporary folk musicians and on 'De Baile Solto? - the follow up to ?Avante? (released on Mais Um Discos in 2013) - he?s not reviving but reprogramming Pernambucan rhythms by fusing them with outside influences to create a brave new direction for Brazilian music. Born in Recife (Northeast Brazil), Siba cites the traditions and origins of maracatu as inspiration for ?De Baile Solto?. The lyrical themes are particular potent as they deal with his views on the changing political climate in his region and urging marginalised communities to stand up for their rights. These potent messages of defiance are delivered by Siba in his unique, laconic poetic vocal delivery style! |
