The music of Kala Jula (Samba Diabate, Vincent Zanetti, Helene Labarriere & Jacky Molard) owes much to the rich traditions of Mand?. While it most often expresses timeless truths, its roots go a long way back in time. With its rich griot inheritance, it draws on the source of the epics and the myths of the donsow hunters, privileged custodians of the defining values of Mandingo culture. "Juru n?ani", four strings, could have been the title of this record: for the first time guitars, n'goni and zena are mixed with those of violin and double bass in a new kind of Mandingo quartet. |
