The Pygmies of north-eastern Congo DR, known as Mbuti, are divided into three groups, the Asua, the Efe and several Sua and Kango sub-groups. The musical life of the Asua manifests itself on different occasions. Important events include specific songs and dances. In the forest, there are few evenings without singing. The Asua are also among the main animators of the music of the villagers with whom they have contact, especially during rituals, mourning, ancestor worship and during the celebrations that conclude the initiation ceremonies. The flexibility of the Asua singers is shown by their sense of improvisation which allows them to adapt almost instantly to any situation. |
