Ercilia Costa was born in 1902 in a small fishing community near Lisbon, but her natural talent as fadista brought her to the attention of a local fado house, where she sang already as a teenager. In the mid-20s she was already a well-known and admired fadista with a growing national popularity. Ercilia Costa was indisputably the first Portuguese international star and her status has since become legendary.
