Sigrid Kjetilsdotter Jore is a young folksinger from Valle in Setesdal, Norway. Folk music is not always easy to transcribe. Should one try to shape folk music so it fits into the notation system created for classical music, or should one try to ?stretch? the notation system, so that what?s written down is as similar to the performance as possible? Sigrid has used music and lyrics written down by many different collectors on the album. Each had their own way of transcribing folk music, and they all had taken a stance regarding above question. In any case, one can?t avoid the fact that the transcriptions were just a skeleton, a framework. She has taken her own sense of style as a starting point, especially as regards tonality and rhythm, in order to give life to this skeleton and turn these notes into living songs. |
