Gagaku refers to a refined, noble musical genre originating from China and Korea. In Japan, it is associated with the ancient imperial court and aristocracy. Gagaku repertoires can be related to religious rituals as well as artistic entertainment. Japanese gagaku has evolved in such a way that it no longer bears resemblance to Korean gagaku. Instruments uses are wood wind instruments (kagura bue, koma bue, ryueteki), string instruments (zithers and lutes) and drums and idiophones. The Ono Ensemble was formed in 1887; now led by its fourth director Ono Takashi and has ten musicians and two dancers. As always, with extensive booklet in French and English, with notes on the genre, musical instruments, history and more. |
