The sisters Lale and Nerkis, born in Thessaloniki at the end of the 19th century, were among the first female musicians to sing to records in modern Turkey. Between 1928 and 1937 they sang about 120 songs either together or separately, having being accompanied by great instrumentalist such as Nubar Teykay (violin), Nevres Bey (ud), Mesut Cemil (cello) and Artaki Candan (kanun). Apart from their archival value, their records bear remarkable musical qualities for the traditional style of performance, refrained from all commercial elements. However, the most striking aspect of their musical performance is observed in the pieces they have sung together. In these songs they show such a great harmony as if they had been performed by one singer, which is an achievement for unison performance. |
