Ultralum may have taken its name from a French comic book album in which another time-travelling space agent ends up as a hostage on a remote planet. However, the rhythm music of Ultralum, conceived by guitarist Aki Haarala and Riku Karvonen, is based on liberation, as each of the 23 musicians in the collective has been allowed to play and sing whatever he or she wants, without reacting or reacting to what has gone before. Recorded in layers and taking shape over time, the album sounds like a challenge, but it has turned into an opportunity - and ultimately into an imaginative work of art that cannot be reduced to one or two rhythmic styles. So the fusion written above refers first and foremost to a way of working rather than a style of fusion, although there is a little of that in Ultralum.
